This year we are doing things a bit differently due to the unprecedented circumstances people around the world are dealing with because of COVID-19. Unfortunately, WE WILL NOT BE HOLDING AN IN-PERSON 5K RUN/WALK THIS YEAR. This was a difficult call for us to make but it is a necessary call in order to ensure everyone's health and safety, and we are not sure that we will legally even be able to hold the group race in July. However, we still want to honor Krystina's legacy, and we still need to raise funds in order to keep our programs running for the children and women in Kipsongo! So, instead of a physical group event, WE ARE OFFERING A VARIETY OF VIRTUAL CLASSES that Kipsongo supporters can register for from anywhere! Anyone still wishing to run or walk the 5K, may register for the Virtual 5K Run/Walk option.
To sign up for these virtual classes, first register for the 5K (this step is free), and then select as many classes as you wish in the add-on section of registration.
Also in the add-on section, participants will have the option to add on donations for specific projects we run in Kipsongo. We are aware that this year has been difficult for people in many ways. We are therefore not soliciting sponsors for this year's event, but rather are relying on our supporters to do what they can to help us ensure that we can continue to provide for the community in Kipsongo. If you can afford to add on a donation to your registration, we promise you it will be greatly appreciated and will go a long way both in making up for the revenue the Project is missing out on this year from event sponsorships, and in the lives of the women and children in Kipsongo.
We are truly grateful for the continued support we have received during these trying times! We hope everyone enjoys this virtual experience we have been working so hard to bring to you, and we can't wait until we are all able to come TOGETHER next year in person!
Stay safe and healthy.
Thank you from everyone at The Kipsongo Project
For anyone new to this event, here is some background info:
The Kipsongo Project 5K Run/Walk is an annual event benefitting The Kipsongo Project, a 501 c3 non-profit organization based in Kipsongo Slum in Kenya. The Project aims to improve the lives of those living in Kipsongo Slum by equipping community members with the tools they need to earn an income and contribute positively to society. The Project funds various programs including children's nutrition and education programs, a micro-finance program, health programs, and more.
The Project was started nine years ago by Krystina Finn and Lindsey Casagrande who were living in Kenya at the time. This 5K race, started by Krystina, was one of the first fundraisers held for the Project. Shortly afterwards, Krystina was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer and passed away in December of 2014 after a long and courageous battle. This race is a way to honor Krystina's legacy and to carry on her dream of helping the women and children in Kipsongo Slum.
